Kathy Davis, Mt. Shasta Vista Volunteer Firefighter of the Year 2009, accepts her award from
Assistant Fire Chief Dan Jordan at Siskiyou County's annual banquet.

Kathy Davis is Always Ready to Serve Her Community

By: Assistant Chief Dan Jordan

Annually, all the volunteer fire departments and companies in Siskiyou County can choose their Volunteer of the Year.  The awards ceremony is held in early March at the Volunteer Firefighters’ dinner in Yreka where the nominee is presented and receives certificates of appreciation from many dignitaries including the Siskiyou County Board of Supervisors.  This year Mt. Shasta Vista VFC Assistant Chief Dan Jordan gave the presentation.

Mt. Shasta Vista’s Volunteer Fire Company nomination for the 2009 Merit Award was Kathy Davis.

Kathy Davis has a long history of serving her community by helping others in any way she can. That is just part of her nature.

About nine years ago, while serving as a member of Neighborhood Watch, she heard that the Mt. Shasta Vista Fire Company was in dire need of volunteers. As a person who volunteers where there is a need, Kathy thought that she would submit an application to be a volunteer firefighter. Part of what prompted her, was that she heard that there were already other women firefighters volunteering.

Kathy’s application was approved by the fire company Board of Directors and since that time she has been a significant asset to the fire company attending the majority of training meetings and taking other classes to update her skills including EMS First Responder which needs to be recertified every other year.

Kathy Davis embodies all the qualities of the Merit Award. She is worthy of this award because of her gentle nature and caring attitude to all she serves, her dedication to excellence in her work with the fire company over all these years, and most of all, her willingness to share her skills and experience with all members of the fire company. She is certainly deserving of all the respect that comes with receiving this Merit Award.
