Juniper Flat Fire Risk
Juniper Flat fuels - flammable vegetation - consist of juniper
trees, sage and manzanita,
including many highly flammable dead, dying and crackling dry specimens. Most of
the area
consists of untreated, undeveloped land. |
 |
| Dead trees, many killed by lightening strikes, stay in the
landscape virtually forever. The desert air preserves them in this dry,
easily ignited form. |
 |
| Juniper trees in more heavily vegetated areas of Juniper Flat grow
with their canopies touching. These trees can be quickly heated to
temperatures that cause them to explode into flames when exposed
to the winds of a wildfire. Their close proximity to one another makes a
wildfire virtually impossible to stop. |
 |
| Juniper trees like this one, which have been burned in previous
fires, are very quick to ignite if exposed to another fire. |
